Grief is experienced as an overwhelming assault. The middle sessions are characterized by relapses. Perspectives re-emerge that clients felt they had already addressed. They do not understand that the perspective might be the same, but the issues and aspects of it are different. The grief is chronic, nagging, and often relentless. Issues revolve around identity and role changes, and the need to create a new ‘I’. Later sessions are times of reconstructing and reinvesting in meaningful life and new narratives.

I decided that if I had to come and see you that I might as well be honest if you showed any willingness to hear my story. I need to do something to stop this crying. Men shouldn’t cry. I never have and don’t know why I am now. Counsellor: Crying should not be a matter of what is acceptable or not acceptable. However, I do realize that American society often dictates different behaviours for men and women in terms of coping and emotional expression.
